"Τρικάρηνος Ὄφις, also known as the column of serpents or three-headed serpent.

It was the support of an ancient Greek gold tripod of the beginning of the 5th century b.c.e. which was originally located in Delphi.

The monument was built in the spring of 478 b.c.e., a few months after the Persian defeat at the Battle of Plataea in August 479 b.c.e. by the coalition of Hellenic city-states and placed in the temple of Apollo at Delphi.

The tripod was made to commemorate the Greeks who were killed fighting at the Battle of Plataea (479 bce) against the Achaemenid Persians during the Persian Wars, and according to Herodotus the metal used came from the melting down of Persian weapons and loot.

The tripod was 8 meters high and the heads of the snakes remained intact on the column until the end of the 17th century."
